Can anyone explain why Steve Miller isn't in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame before some of these others?   (Photo by Kevin Winter/Getty Images)

With the announcement of this year’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominations, critics have some questions…

No doubt they want to know how such acts as [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Eric B. and Rakim[/lastfm], and [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Rufus with Chaka Khan[/lastfm] can be nominated before some of their favorite acts. Also nominated are [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]The Small Faces[/lastfm]/[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]The Faces[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Guns n’ Roses[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Donovan[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Red Hot Chili Peppers[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]War[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]The Beastie Boys[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Laura Nyro[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Donna Summer[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Joan Jett[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]The Cure[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Freddie King[/lastfm] and [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]The Spinners[/lastfm].

In order to nominated, an artist had to release their debut recording at least 25 years ago. The first induction ceremony was in 1986, and among the many eligible acts yet to be nominated or inducted are [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Steve Miller[/lastfm],[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”] The Moody Blues[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Deep Purple[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Rush[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Bad Company[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Journey[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Foreigner[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Yes[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Grand Funk[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]The Monkees[/lastfm],[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”] Joe Cocker[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Pat Benatar[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Chicago[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]KISS[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Paul Butterfield[/lastfm] and [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Cheap Trick[/lastfm].

So the question is should the nominating process be changed? A committee of music industry executives puts together the nomination list, and then ballots are sent to more than 500 voters in the industry. Unless the choices are made strictly on record sales, ticket sales, radio airplay or the scope of an artist’s influence on music, it will always be a popularity contest.

[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Alice Cooper[/lastfm], who was inducted last year after being eligible for 16 years, says he still has no idea “how you get nominated,” and “nobody can figure out how you get voted in.” As an inductee, he now gets to vote and plans to write in who he feels should be in. That includes The Moody Blues, Deep Purple, [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Burt Bacharach[/lastfm] and Joe Cocker.

How about some [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Grand Funk Railroad[/lastfm]?  I mean, c’mon!  Well, at least we can salute them all here on KLUV. ~JZ.
