A moderate amount of beer or spirits each day could help us live longer by reducing the risk of two of our biggest killers.

Researchers at Pennsylvania State University studied the health habits of 80,000 people over six years and found that consuming a moderate amount of beer or liquor each day actually helps the body by improving cholesterol levels, which helps keep arteries clean and the blood pumping as it should – thereby reducing the risk of stroke and heart disease.

Although both beer and liquor provide these health benefits, the effect is stronger for beer drinkers.

“Almost without exception if you look at fatal and non fatal heart disease, people who drink in moderation have substantially lower rates than people who abstain,” says study author Shue Huang. “All the more reason to raise a glass – but probably not more than that.”

Wine wasn’t included in this study but much research has shown similar benefits for wine drinking.
