The 2017 World Series begins.
LA and the Dodgers, with Highland Park’s own Clayton Kershaw. And Houston, the first city to win a pennant in both the American and National Leagues.
Nolan Ryan is also headed back to the World Series, which probably irks more than a few people. As much fun as it might be, Ray Davis and Bob Simpson will be watching at home while they hand out candy on the porch.
Of course, our David Rancken is BEYOND geeked that the Astros are in the World Series. The last time Houston made the dance, they got swept by the Chicago White Sox in 4 games. David says what makes this one perfect is the fact that they’re playing the Dodgers – one of their biggest rivals during their National League days. David also thinks the Astros should still be in the National League.
As for Jody, the only game he ever saw at the Astrodome featured a benches-clearing brawl – which ended with Dusty Baker grabbing a bat and going after a fan on top of the Dodgers dugout. Jody was an Astros fan before the Rangers came to town, and listened to their games on his dad’s transistor radio. Favorite player? Jimmy Wynn.
And Rebekah? Rebekah is one of those fans who is out when her team is out. Yes, she has family in Houston. In fact, her brother lives there. But, as it is with UT and her sacred Texas Longhorns, if her team isn’t there she doesn’t care. And don’t try to guilt her into it, either. In her view, loyalty doesn’t vary or waver.
So, it’s two to one. David and Jody on one side, backing the team from Texas, no matter which one – and Rebekah, who is only Ranger Red and Blue, forever and true.
Where do you come down? Lots of reasons to root for either team, and both parts of the country wouldn’t mind a morale boost. So help us answer the question: can a Rangers fan ever pull for the Astros?
And there is still the matter of Kershaw, darn it.
